5V or 12V for 16x16mm LED Neon? Compare Current at Equal Power First

Quick decision

At the same electrical power P, a 12V load draws 5/12, or about 41.7%, of the current of a 5V load. This is a conditional wiring comparison, not evidence that LIKELIGHT's two variants have equal actual power or that the 12V version can be fed through an entire 5m reel from one end. Freeze the selected voltage, color and density first.

Published facts and evidence boundary

Separate a continuous line from a pixel effect

The 16x16mm body and 120-degree top emission can produce a visible outline, but the page also offers RGB, RGB pixel and RGBW versions at several LED densities. Those choices are not one default build, and LED count alone does not establish controllable pixel count.

For close-view lettering, compare line uniformity and corner brightness on the real backing. For moving segments, approve the target animation together with the delivered control grouping. A static-color job should not automatically buy an unneeded pixel circuit.

Choose 5V or 12V without merging unrelated options

The page summary lists DC5V/DC12V, 30/60/72/144 LEDs/m and RGB/RGB pixel/RGBW versions. It does not confirm that the densest option, a particular controller and both voltages share one circuit design.

Each order line needs voltage, color type, LEDs and pixels per metre, emission direction and connector pinout. A 5V supply cannot be connected directly to a 12V body, or vice versa; the actual control method is version-dependent.

Compare currents only with equal power stated

There is no published W/m for either voltage option, so actual current cannot be calculated. For an equal-power thought comparison only, I5=P/5 and I12=P/12; the 12V current is about 41.7% of the 5V current. This is not a measurement of the two LIKELIGHT variants.

With similar line resistance, voltage drop is approximately current times resistance, so lower current usually reduces absolute conductor loss. Different PCB, connectors or load can change that outcome. A 5m reel is not permission for a 5m single-end feed; test the loaded end under the chosen scene.

Check the control build separately from the supply

The page offers an RGB-pixel option but does not publish one fixed IC, pixel pitch or controller-port limit for L-NH-1616. RGBW also does not by itself prove addressability; data direction and mapping follow the chosen production version.

Three-pin male/female connectors are listed, yet pin count alone cannot establish every variant's wire order. Check polarity and signal on the delivered sample; LED density and reel length do not prove a cut position.

Fit the finished 16mm section, not an assumed PCB width

The page lists 16x16mm, IP67, end caps, clips and an aluminum profile. Text says 10mm PCB while an illustration says 10/12mm, so neither number should be used as a guaranteed finished clearance.

Light a sample in the actual slot, corner, clip and cable-exit conditions, leaving room to service the end. IP67 for the neon body does not automatically protect caps, field joints or the power enclosure to the same level.

Conditional project decision table

Project condition Decision and evidence
Close-view letters and tight curves Compare uniformity and corners on the selected RGB/RGBW build, not LED count alone.
Distant, simple outline If static color is enough, do not assume pixel control is needed.
Dry protected installation Choose by 16mm fit and service access, not IP wording alone.
Rain or damp exposure Review IP67 body with caps, connectors and supply as one assembly.
One or more 5m reels Obtain actual W/m for the selected voltage and measure loaded-end voltage.
Segment animation required Freeze the version's IC, grouping, pinout and controller compatibility.

Use LIKELIGHT L-NH-1616 as a voltage-choice sample

The 16x16mm top-emitting neon is a candidate for an architectural outline or sign where 5V and 12V power routing can be compared. The equal-power current ratio favors 12V for conductor current, but a real project must return to the selected color, density, control and wattage.

It is not suitable to infer injection spacing from the 5m reel or to label every density the same pixel structure. Approve a representative length with its caps and connectors, record loaded-end voltage in the intended scene, then repeat only the proven arrangement.

Information required before quotation

  • elevation and main viewing positions
  • 16mm slot, corners and mounting method
  • color version and target scenes
  • 5V or 12V, LED density and pixel grouping
  • actual W/m and number of reels
  • feed zones, cable route and controller
  • end caps, three-pin pinout and protection
  • sample acceptance, production quantity and delivery

These details combine visual continuity, voltage, control and protection into one installation decision; voltage or reel length alone is not a quotation specification.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 12V option necessarily more efficient?

No. The 41.7% figure is a current ratio only when both loads have the same power, not a comparison of actual consumption.

Can 12V feed the whole 5m from one end?

The page gives no validated feed distance; use the actual rating, route resistance and loaded-end measurement.

Are 144 LEDs/m equal to 144 pixels/m?

No. LED density and controllable grouping must be verified separately for the delivered build.

Does IP67 include field connectors?

Not automatically; caps, joints and supply protection must match exposure.
