Quick buying answer

Choose by control and installation responsibility, not by 20mm versus 30mm alone.

LIKELIGHT candidate Published evidence Strong first fit Quotation stop gate
L-R-D20 UCS1903 SPI [S1] 20mm, RGB, 360°, 12/24V options, 10/20 pixels per metre, 0.5–2m custom lengths, three tube finishes, IP66 wording many slim tubes in trees, landscape features and organic layouts where centralized pixel mapping is acceptable power, voltage-version matrix, actual controller/interface and tree/suspension design
L-R-D30 UCS512 DMX [S2] 30mm hanging 3D RGB tube, DMX/UCS512 addressable, 360° wording structured atrium, event and stage grids where addressable branches and commissioning records are preferred voltage, power, pixels, length, material and IP are not released in the reviewed page

D20 is currently more calculation-ready for visual resolution because pixels/metre are published. D30 is more explicit about a DMX/UCS512 product direction but is not quotation-ready until its placeholder and missing fields are resolved. Neither page supports a complete power-system design.

1. The real choice: centralized SPI mapping or addressed DMX branches

UCS1903 is a cascade-pixel architecture in the D20. A controller sends ordered RGB data through each pixel path; the physical sequence and controller file must match. The public D20 page also mentions SD, DMX and Art-Net systems [S1], but these are upstream system directions—not proof that the tube itself is native DMX.

D30 is presented as DMX/UCS512 addressable [S2]. That can support written addresses and structured branch records, but the actual UCS512 variant, address method and channel footprint are missing. “DMX” does not remove the need for controller, splitter/interface, addressing and recovery documentation.

The K-8000C manual explicitly separates TTL pixel outputs and DMX differential outputs and lists different IC modes [S3]. Freeze the shipped tube and controller mode together.

2. Published facts versus missing quotation fields

D20 facts

The page lists RGB SMD5050, 20mm diameter, 360-degree wording, 12/24V options, 10 or 20 pixels/m, UCS1903, lengths from 0.5m to 2m, transparent/milky/silver tubes, input direction, customizable cable and IP66 wording [S1].

It does not publish watts, current, weight, voltage-to-circuit pairing, connector current, mounting load or complete controller limits. The headline says IP65 while the specification row says IP66; use the released order report, not either headline alone.

D30 facts

The indexed page identifies model L-R-D30, 30mm hanging 3D RGB, DMX/UCS512 addressable control, 360-degree wording and hanging applications [S2]. Its LED count/pitch, material and IP rows visibly remain placeholders. Voltage, power, length and weight are not established in the reviewed evidence.

This evidence asymmetry matters: D30 may still be the right product, but the first commercial action is a completed technical data sheet, not a power-supply quote.

3. Sixty D20 tubes: pixel and port calculation

Assume sixty tubes, each exactly 1m. The public choices yield:

D20 version Total pixels Logical RGB values/frame
10 pixels/m 60×10=600 600×3=1,800
20 pixels/m 60×20=1,200 1,200×3=3,600

The K-8000C manual gives example modes of 512 or 1,024 lights per port and warns that frame rate changes with load and IC [S3]. As a planning screen only:

Planning mode 600 pixels 1,200 pixels
512 pixels/port ceil(600/512)=2 ports ceil(1,200/512)=3 ports
1,024 pixels/port 1 port 2 ports

This is not a released topology. Port boundaries should also follow physical branches, cable distance, service zones and acceptable fault impact. A controller maximum is not automatically the best operational load.

4. Conditional DMX universe calculation for D30

ANSI E1.11-2024 defines up to 512 data slots in one DMX universe [S4]. If—and only if—the ordered D30 maps each RGB pixel directly to three consecutive slots:

`floor(512 ÷ 3) = 170 RGB pixels per universe`

For a teaching comparison:

Hypothetical D30 pixels/tube 60-tube pixels Minimum universes
10 600 ceil(600/170)=4
20 1,200 ceil(1,200/170)=8

These are not D30 specifications because its pixel count and exact footprint are unpublished. If addressing is per tube, grouped pixel or proprietary UCS512 mode, the calculation changes. Obtain the mode table and address-writing procedure.

5. Six-by-four-metre layout example

Suppose sixty tubes form 10 columns by 6 rows across a 6m×4m rectangular zone, with first and last tube centers placed on the boundaries:

`horizontal center spacing = 6m ÷ (10−1) ≈ 0.667m`

`depth center spacing = 4m ÷ (6−1) = 0.8m`

This is a coordinate example, not a recommended spacing. Real layouts require edge margins, structure, varying tube lengths, viewing distance, tree branches, sprinklers, access and cable routes. For an organic tree canopy, use surveyed coordinates instead of forcing a rectangular grid.

6. Why power cannot be calculated yet

Neither reviewed product page provides a complete, order-specific watts-per-tube value. Therefore this article intentionally does not guess power, current, supply count, cable size or injection interval.

The quotation must add, for every length/voltage/pixel version:

`maximum approved watts/tube, measured current, connector rating, maximum tubes/branch, cable length and allowable voltage drop`

Only then calculate branch load, supply derating, protective devices and conductor loss. Pixel count is not a power rating.

8. Suspension, tree and public-space boundary

Tree installation

Do not fasten to living branches with methods that girdle, cut or prevent growth. A qualified tree/landscape party should approve attachment, movement allowance, pruning, lightning exposure and seasonal inspection. Keep cables away from abrasion, water traps and public reach. A branch is not a certified structural support merely because it holds the sample.

Atrium or event grid

Define primary support, tube mass, attachment rating and independent secondary retention where required. Review sway, tube-to-tube impact, fire detection/sprinklers, escape routes, overhead public risk and lift access. Power/data cables are not suspension members unless specifically rated.

9. IP and connector boundary

D20 has conflicting IP65 headline and IP66 specification wording [S1]. D30 displays IP65/IP67 as a placeholder [S2]. IEC 60529 classifies enclosure protection [S5], but the installation also contains end caps, hanging entries, connectors, splices, branches, boxes and customized cable exits.

Request the exact report and sample construction. Inspect after assembly, movement, cleaning and replacement. Never convert a product-level IP label into a complete outdoor tree or atrium-system claim.

10. Sample acceptance workflow

  1. Submit surveyed coordinates/CAD, tube count, lengths, viewing points, content, exposure and operating schedule.
  2. Freeze D20 or D30 order code, voltage, pixel rhythm, color, tube finish/material, IP construction and connector.
  3. Obtain pixel/address map, controller/interface topology, port/universe ledger, power zones and suspension drawing.
  4. Build one representative tree branch zone or atrium grid bay with production hardware.
  5. Run solid colors, falling effects, lowest level, fastest effect, synchronized scenes and restart states.
  6. Measure loaded current and voltage at source and branch first/middle/last points after thermal stabilization.
  7. Test approved open-data, lost-power, bad-address, disconnected-tube and controller-loss conditions.
  8. Record downstream impact, default state, recovery steps and replacement time.
  9. Inspect supports, secondary retention, cable abrasion, water path, public clearance and service access.
  10. Freeze golden sample, BOM, drawings, coordinates, source/export files, controller versions, address ledger, acceptance video and spares.

11. When not to choose each option

Do not choose D20 SPI when

  • the operator requires independent field addresses but no mapping/interface workflow is available;
  • long organic branches cannot be divided into acceptable fault and maintenance zones;
  • watts, connector limits and voltage-version matrix remain unknown at order release;
  • a tree attachment plan has not been approved.

Do not choose D30 DMX when

  • the quote still contains placeholder LED, material or IP fields;
  • pixel count, footprint and address-writing method are not documented;
  • overhead support and secondary retention are missing;
  • a small temporary event cannot justify addressing and commissioning labor.

Do not approve either when

  • layout is based only on a rendering, without coordinates and access;
  • power is guessed from pixel count;
  • controller maximums are used without frame-rate and fault-zone review;
  • IP is claimed for the complete installation without evidence;
  • there is no recovery file, address ledger, spare plan or safe replacement method.

FAQ

Is D20 a native DMX fixture?

The product uses UCS1903 SPI and lists DMX/Art-Net controller-system directions [S1]. Confirm the actual gateway/controller; do not assume direct DMX addressing.

How many D20 pixels are in sixty 1m tubes?

The published 10/20 pixels per metre gives 600 or 1,200 pixels, subject to the ordered version [S1].

How many DMX universes does D30 need?

Unknown until pixels/tube and channel footprint are released. The 4/8-universe examples are conditional three-slot RGB calculations.

Can pixel count determine the power supply?

No. Watts/current are not published for the exact versions; obtain measured maximum load and connector limits.

Is 30mm automatically brighter than 20mm?

No. Diameter does not establish output. Comparable photometric samples are required.

Can tubes hang directly from their power cables?

Only if the released design explicitly rates the assembly for that load. Otherwise use approved primary support and secondary retention.

Does IP66 make D20 suitable for any outdoor tree?

No. Confirm the conflicting page wording, exact test boundary and every installed joint [S5].

Is one K-8000C port always good for 1,024 pixels?

No. The manual shows mode/IC and frame-rate dependence [S3]; release the actual project configuration.
