40mm DMX512 Facade Pixels: Choose Grid Pitch Before Buying Nodes
Quick decision
Set the grid from the intended image and actual viewing routes, not the 40mm housing diameter. In a purely illustrative 12-column by 18-row layout, 216 points at 300mm pitch span 3.3m by 5.1m between outer centres; at 450mm they span 4.95m by 7.65m. Neither layout is approved by a 120-degree beam figure alone. Mock up the hardest letter or curve before fixing pitch.
Published facts and evidence boundary
| Parameter | Published or derived value |
|---|---|
| Product evidence | 40mm body; six RGB LEDs in page title; model L-C-406-DMXRGBW |
| Optics | 120-degree beam; no published project pitch or luminance at viewer |
| Control | DMX512; RGB wording conflicts with RGBW model suffix |
| Protection | IP68 for the point, not an installed cable system |
| Illustrative grid | 12 × 18 = 216 points; 300mm pitch gives 3.3m × 5.1m centre span |
| Alternate grid | 450mm pitch gives 4.95m × 7.65m centre span; not a recommended pitch |

Start with the smallest readable feature
A grid that reads as a colour wash from across a street can break a logo stroke or text curve seen from a walkway. Draw the narrowest intended line in point centres and inspect a full-size sample from the nearest and farthest actual routes, in daylight and at night.
For 12 columns and 18 rows, count 216 points. The centre span is (12−1)×300mm = 3.3m wide and (18−1)×300mm = 5.1m high. At 450mm those spans become 4.95m and 7.65m. Equal node count covers more wall, but image detail is coarser; this comparison is geometry, not a visibility guarantee.
Keep lens diameter, pitch and beam separate
The LIKELIGHT record identifies a 40mm body, six RGB SMD LEDs and a 120-degree beam. The 40mm number describes the fixture, not hole size or centres. A wide beam describes angular emission, not an approved 300mm or 450mm grid, uniformity, brightness or contrast against a lit facade.
Mock up the proposed substrate, colour and fixing depth. Compare the same moving line and one static letter at both pitches; if the narrow feature disappears, reduce pitch or simplify the content rather than expecting the 120-degree figure to restore missing pixels.
Do not turn node count into invented power
The reviewed product record does not give an operating voltage or watts per point. Therefore 216 points cannot yet be converted responsibly into amps, power supplies or allowable cable lengths. A different blog's DC24V claim is not a confirmed electrical specification for this order.
After the ordered sample and datasheet establish voltage and measured scene load, calculate branch current as points per branch × measured watts per point ÷ supply voltage. Measure loaded voltage at the far end of each proposed route. Keep this electrical decision separate from the pitch mock-up.
Freeze colour mode before drawing the DMX patch
The page says DMX512 and RGB LEDs, while model L-C-406-DMXRGBW ends in RGBW. That inconsistency matters to channel assignment: the count of physical LED emitters does not specify slots per fixture. Do not infer a three- or four-channel footprint from the name alone.
First approve the visual grid and mark physical row order. Then test the delivered sample with its actual mode, starting address method and controller, recording the first and last position in every row. A 216-node drawing is a geometry exercise, not a promise that all nodes fit one controller output.
Make an outdoor point removable without weakening the facade
IP68 is published for the lamp body. It does not automatically cover cable entries, field connectors, drilled holes or the enclosure that feeds a facade grid. A sealed point can still fail as a system when water follows the cable into an unprotected join.
On a representative bay, check hole and clip dimensions, cable bend radius, drainage path, strain relief and access to replace one failed point. If the fixing cannot be serviced without opening a large panel, adjust the fixing design before purchasing the full 216-point example.
Conditional project decision table
| Project condition | Decision and evidence |
|---|---|
| Small logo text or close walkway | Try tighter pitch and test its narrowest stroke at full size. |
| Remote colour field or large outline | A wider grid may work; compare from the real route, not a render. |
| Sheltered demonstration bay | Use it to approve content and mounting; do not infer outdoor joints. |
| Rain-exposed facade | Detail field joins, cable entries, drainage and service access beyond IP68 points. |
| Large node count | Hold supply sizing until voltage and per-point power are confirmed on the ordered version. |
| Mapped DMX animation | Freeze RGB/RGBW mode, slot footprint and physical row order from the sample. |
Where the LIKELIGHT 40mm point fits
The 40mm DMX512 RGB point with a 120-degree beam and IP68 body is a candidate for a direct-view decorative facade grid where individual round points are part of the intended image. The 12-by-18 exercise helps quantify how a pitch choice changes occupied area before ordering samples.
It is a poor fit if the design assumes the 40mm diameter dictates pixel pitch, if fine text must be legible without a full-size trial, or if the budget presumes an unpublished wattage. Approve optical, DMX and mounting samples separately.

Information required before quotation
- facade elevation and intended content
- nearest and farthest viewing routes
- candidate 300mm or 450mm pitch and mock-up area
- actual ordered RGB or RGBW mode and address method
- confirmed voltage and measured watts per point
- row order, cable routing and controller outputs
- IP68 point interfaces, holes, drainage and service access
- sample count, production count and delivery date
These inputs separate image readability, physical grid area, DMX mapping and electrical sizing; the 216-point illustration is not a ready-to-install system.
Frequently asked questions
Does 40mm mean a 40mm pitch?
No. It is the point body size; pitch comes from the image and full-size viewing test.
Does a 120-degree beam prove a 450mm grid?
No. Angle alone does not establish luminance, contrast or readable detail.
How many supplies for 216 points?
The reviewed record has no voltage or per-point watts; confirm these on the ordered version first.
Is the DMX mode RGB or RGBW?
The page wording and model suffix differ; approve the delivered mode and slot footprint before patching.
