How to Choose a DMX RGBW LED Wall Washer: Beam Angle, Throw Distance and Power Guide

A project guide to selecting a 96 W DMX RGBW wall washer by beam angle, throw distance, facade geometry, circuit load and installation length.

Why beam angle should be chosen before fixture quantity

A facade can fail even with enough wattage: a narrow beam may leave dark gaps, while a wide beam can spill light into windows and lose vertical reach. Start with wall height, setback, mounting position and the surface that must remain visibly illuminated.

Beam angle controls geometric spread, but final brightness and uniformity also depend on optics, surface reflectance, aiming and fixture spacing. A site mock-up remains more useful than choosing quantity from power alone.

What 10°, 25°, 60° and 90° mean at 3 m

Using the geometric relation width ≈ 2 × distance × tan(beam angle ÷ 2), a 3 m throw gives approximate beam widths of 0.52 m at 10°, 1.33 m at 25°, 3.46 m at 60° and 6.00 m at 90°. These values describe geometric spread, not guaranteed photometric coverage.

Narrow 10° or 25° options can be evaluated for columns, taller walls and concentrated vertical accents. Wider 60° or 90° options suit closer mounting and broad wash effects, but may require more control of spill and overlap.

Read the 96 W fixture load correctly

The page publishes 96 W per fixture. Ten fixtures therefore represent 960 W of connected rated load; 25 fixtures represent 2,400 W. These are load-planning values before driver behaviour, diversity, cable loss and design margin are considered.

The published input range is AC85–277V, 50/60Hz. Circuit current must be calculated for the selected project voltage and confirmed driver data; dividing 96 W by mains voltage alone does not include power factor or efficiency. Divide large facades into serviceable electrical zones.

Plan DMX zones around the facade, not the catalogue

DMX should be planned by facade zones such as columns, entrances, rooflines and feature walls. Confirm the final colour mode, channel use, start addresses, universe allocation, data direction and controller outputs before the wiring drawing is released.

RGBW adds a white channel to colour mixing, but the exact channel mode is configuration-dependent. Do not calculate channel totals until the ordered fixture mode is confirmed.

Housing length, aiming and outdoor joints

The page lists aluminium alloy with tempered glass and length options of 0.5 m, 1 m, 1.5 m and 2 m. Length selection changes bracket positions, aiming consistency, expansion allowance, cable routing and replacement access; it is not only a quantity decision.

The product page identifies an IP65 outdoor configuration. Outdoor performance still depends on cable exits, connectors, end treatment, drainage and mounting orientation. Aim and lock a sample fixture before repeating the bracket position across the facade.

Quick beam-angle and project selection table

Tall column or concentrated accent Evaluate 10° or 25° first, then verify reach and overlap with a mock-up.
Broad wall with short setback Evaluate 60° or 90° while checking spill into windows and adjacent surfaces.
3 m throw with 25° optic Geometric beam width is about 1.33 m before photometric and surface effects.
10 fixtures Published connected rated load starts at 960 W before design allowances.
Outdoor facade Use the confirmed IP65 configuration and include joints, exits and drainage in the installation design.
Multi-zone colour scenes Confirm RGBW channel mode, DMX addresses, universes and controller outputs.

Where the LIKELIGHT 96 W wall washer fits

LIKELIGHT model L-W-10024-DMXRGBW-96W is published with 24 LEDs, DMX RGBW control, 96 W power, AC85–277V input, six beam-angle options and CE/RoHS information. It can be evaluated for architectural walls, columns, landscape structures and outdoor engineering wash effects.

It is not automatically the right choice for close-range media graphics, concealed continuous lines or sites where spill-light limits cannot be met with the selected optic and aiming. Those projects need a different optical format or a physical mock-up before quantity is frozen.

Information needed for an accurate project proposal

  • Facade elevation, wall height and illuminated width
  • Mounting setback, aiming direction and bracket location
  • Preferred beam angle or target coverage width
  • Fixture lengths, quantities and electrical zones
  • Mains voltage, DMX controller and scene requirements
  • Surface material, outdoor exposure, sample and delivery schedule

Provide wall dimensions, mounting setback, fixture position, surface material, target colour effect, selected mains voltage, control system, cable route, exposure conditions and delivery schedule. These inputs allow beam overlap, fixture count, circuit zoning and DMX planning to be evaluated together.
