Are 400-LED WS2811 Addressable Curtain Lights Suitable for Commercial Displays?
A buyer can see “400 LEDs” and assume the curtain will show detailed logos or text. That conclusion is unsafe: the same 400 points can form a wide low grid, a square matrix or a tall narrow backdrop, and each layout produces a different visible result.
For a commercial display, the useful question is not only how many LEDs are included. It is whether the physical grid, viewing distance, control workflow, power arrangement and installation environment match the content that visitors must recognise.

Start with content, not the LED count
Simple colour waves, icons and large block shapes tolerate a coarser grid than small text, detailed logos or video-like content. A 360-degree mini RGB point can remain visible from multiple angles, but that does not turn the curtain into a high-resolution screen.
Before purchasing, convert one real logo or animation into the proposed grid and view it from the closest normal audience position. If the message cannot be recognised in that mock-up, more brightness or more effects will not repair insufficient spatial detail.
Why 400 points do not define the curtain resolution
The product page publishes 400 LEDs per set but does not publish the row count, column count, finished width, height or point spacing. A 20 x 20 layout, a 16 x 25 layout and a 10 x 40 layout all contain 400 points, yet their aspect ratios and image behaviour are very different.
Treat these arrangements as planning examples, not product specifications. The approved drawing must show row and column order, physical spacing and data direction before artwork is prepared or mounting hardware is released.
Map WS2811 pixels before programming the show
WS2811 is a cascade-pixel architecture. Project planning should therefore describe pixel sequence, strand order, data direction, controller compatibility and content mapping rather than assuming that every point needs an individually entered DMX address.
Commission one short mapped section first. Display a numbered test pattern so the installer can verify the first point, row transitions and final point; then test solid red, green and blue frames before loading the final animation.
Project selection table
| Project condition | Decision direction | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Large icons and colour waves | Good evaluation direction | A 400-point grid can support simple recognisable content when layout and viewing distance fit. |
| Small text or detailed logos | Build a grid mock-up first | Point count alone cannot prove legibility. |
| Temporary indoor event | Suitable direction | Provide mounting, supply and service access. |
| Sheltered outdoor event | Conditionally evaluate IP54 | Protect controller, power input and connectors as a system. |
| Permanent exposed outdoor site | Re-evaluate the product system | IP54 alone does not approve the full installation. |
| Third-party live-control workflow | Confirm compatibility before ordering | WS2811 mapping and the final controller workflow must match. |
DC5V is confirmed, but the electrical load is not
The page publishes DC5V but no rated power or current. Therefore the total current and power-supply capacity cannot be calculated responsibly from the current page. A USB-powered description also does not establish the output capacity of the final supply or the allowable cable length.
Use the released sample to measure current with the intended brightness and animation. Divide the installation into serviceable power and data zones only after the approved set layout, supply, wire arrangement and connectors are known; record loaded voltage at the far points during commissioning.
IP54 is a configuration boundary, not a complete outdoor system
IP54 is the published protection grade. It can be evaluated for protected displays and controlled event environments, but it does not by itself approve permanent exposure to rain, standing water or wash-down conditions.
The complete installation includes the LED points, controller, power input, connectors, cable exits and mounting surface. For an outdoor or long-term project, each of those elements needs a protection and drainage plan; otherwise the highest-risk connection can define the whole system.
Where the LIKELIGHT curtain fits and where it does not
The LIKELIGHT L-C-WS2811 curtain combines 400 RGB points, WS2811 cascade control, DC5V input, 360-degree points and IP54 in the published configuration. It can be evaluated for wedding backdrops, temporary event scenery, retail windows, party installations and commercial displays where large symbols and animated colour patterns are viewed at an appropriate distance.
It is not the first choice when the brief requires readable small text, video-grade detail, unverified third-party live-control integration or permanent fully exposed outdoor operation. Those requirements need either a confirmed denser display system or a separately engineered control and protection solution.
Suitable when
- Large graphic effects at a suitable viewing distance
- Temporary events, retail windows and decorative backdrops
- Projects able to approve the grid and controller workflow
Re-evaluate when
- Small readable text without a layout test
- Unverified live-video or third-party control requirements
- Permanent fully exposed outdoor installation based on IP54 alone
What to provide before quotation
Send the target curtain width and height, closest viewing distance, sample artwork or animation, installation duration, indoor or outdoor exposure, mounting background, controller workflow, available DC5V supply arrangement, cable exits, service access, quantity and schedule.
These inputs allow LIKELIGHT to evaluate the grid shape, content legibility, pixel sequence, supply zones and connection method together rather than treating “400 LEDs” as a complete project specification.
- Target width, height and viewing distance
- Artwork, animation and acceptable detail
- Installation duration and exposure
- Controller and content workflow
- DC5V supply and connector arrangement
- Mounting, service access, quantity and schedule
Frequently asked questions
Does 400 LEDs mean a 20 x 20 screen?
No. The page publishes 400 LEDs, not the row and column arrangement.
Can each point show a different colour?
WS2811 is an addressable cascade IC, but final mapping depends on the approved layout and controller.
Can the USB description determine the power supply?
No. Rated power is not published, so measure the released sample under the intended effect.
Is IP54 enough for permanent outdoor use?
Not by itself. The controller, input, connectors, mounting and drainage also need a verified design.
