WS2812B vs WS2815: Choosing Between 5V and 12V Addressable LED Strips
WS2812B and WS2815 can both produce individually controlled RGB effects. The useful purchasing question is not which name is newer, but which complete strip and power system fits the installation. A compact display beside its power supply and a long architectural run have different constraints.
Start with WS2812B when a 5V system already fits your layout. Consider WS2815 when 12V distribution and a redundant data path are useful. Neither choice removes the need to calculate power, check controller compatibility and test the finished installation.
1. Quick comparison
| Selection factor | WS2812B | WS2815 |
|---|---|---|
| Common strip supply | 5V | 12V |
| Color channels | RGB | RGB |
| Dedicated white channel | No | No |
| Pixel arrangement | Normally one LED package per pixel | Individually addressable LED packages |
| Signal arrangement | Single data path | Main and backup data paths |
| Best starting point | Compact RGB systems with suitable 5V distribution | RGB systems benefiting from 12V distribution and data redundancy |
| Still needs checking | Voltage, power, controller and wiring | Voltage, power, controller, wiring and backup-input instructions |
