Glowing Tree Ornaments or Tree Uplighting? Choose the Effect Before Ordering

Glowing Tree Ornaments or Tree Uplighting? Choose the Effect Before Ordering

LikeLight Tom · Operations

A tree filled with glowing shapes and a tree whose leaves are illuminated can both look colourful in a photograph. They are not the same lighting job.

If guests should see the decorations themselves, start with decorative RGB lights. If they should see the trunk and canopy, start with a light aimed at those surfaces. Choose that result before comparing lamp quantities.

Not sure which effect to buy?

Send a site photo and describe what guests should see.

First, decide what should be visible

Imagine a hotel courtyard viewed from the restaurant. This is a planning example, not a completed customer project. One design might show colourful objects among the branches. Another might reveal the tree's natural form, with no bright objects competing for attention.

For the first result, LIKELIGHT's bottle-shaped pixel light is a candidate to discuss. The page describes a visible decorative body, RGB colour and a 360-degree viewing angle. RGB means red, green and blue light mixed to create colours. [S1]

For the second result, evaluate a purpose-designed tree-lighting luminaire with the right beam and aiming position. ERCO's design guidance explains why the crown shape, beam distribution and placement matter. Its examples are not performance data for the LIKELIGHT bottle light. [S2]

Desired result Better starting point What to check in a sample
Colourful objects visible among branches Decorative pixel-light bodies Appearance from guest viewing positions; visible cables
Trunk and leaves become the main feature Aimed tree-lighting optics Light reaching the intended surfaces without spilling beyond them
Both effects in one courtyard Separate decorative and tree-lighting layers Whether the objects overpower the illuminated tree
A safely illuminated route or emergency exit A separate functional lighting design Required visibility and applicable site requirements

A decoration can cast some light onto nearby leaves. That does not establish adequate tree illumination, path lighting or any safety-lighting function. No lux level or coverage area is supplied for this bottle-light candidate.

Where the LIKELIGHT bottle light fits

The published model is L-D-6018-Bottle light. Its page identifies DC24V operation, 18 RGB LEDs and programmable colour effects. A pixel is a position controlled in a lighting sequence; 18 LEDs inside one body do not prove 18 separately controlled positions. Ask to see how the proposed light actually responds. [S1]

This makes it a candidate when the decorative object and changing colours are the attraction. It is not a substitute for a directional spotlight simply because both products contain LEDs. Likewise, a broad viewing angle describes visibility around the object, not how far it will illuminate foliage.

Before an outdoor order, obtain the protection specification for the exact body and connectors. The product page gives inconsistent protection ratings, so it does not establish a released outdoor version. Keep the proposal conditional until this is resolved; a visually suitable sample alone is not outdoor approval.

Test one representative area after dark

Do not start by filling every branch on a drawing. Try a representative area using the proposed lights, supports, cabling and controller. A controller is the device that sends the colour and sequence instructions. Ask whether it is included and what equipment is needed for daily operation.

View the sample from the entrance, normal seating position and any nearby guest-room window. Start with a steady, restrained scene, then try the intended animation. Judge it with the existing garden and restaurant lighting on, not only in a completely dark demonstration room.

  • Do the objects look attractive at the real distance, or do they dominate the view?
  • Are the fixing points and cables acceptable in daylight as well as at night?
  • Can staff select the intended scene and restore it after a power interruption?
  • Can one light be replaced without dismantling the whole arrangement?

Agree independent support and cable strain relief with the installer. Do not use electrical leads as suspension cables. For a living tree, have a competent installer and tree-care professional agree attachment and future growth clearance; this article is not a hanging or electrical installation drawing.

If the sample fails visually, change the quantity, placement or product direction before ordering. More lights are not an automatic improvement.

Compare complete proposals, not price per light

A cheaper light can still produce a more expensive installation if supports, accessible wiring or service work are missing from the quote. Conversely, a simpler layout may deliver the chosen effect with fewer objects. Neither outcome can be priced reliably from a photograph.

Proposal item Why it changes the buying decision
Exact light and colour/control configuration The delivered version must reproduce the approved sample
Power supplies, controller and programmed scenes A loose lamp is not an operating decoration
Supports, lead lengths, connectors and installation These determine fit, visible cabling and access
Replacement method and spares Check what happens to the remaining sequence when one unit is disconnected or fails
Sample, transport and installation/service scope Compare what is supplied and what the local contractor must provide

Ask LIKELIGHT to identify the proposed version, show dimensions and wiring, list supplied components, and quote a representative sample. Request separate confirmation of spare availability and delivery terms. These are quotation questions, not promises that every option or service is available.

There is no useful universal lamps-per-tree calculation here: crown shape, viewing distance and the intended effect determine the layout. An electrical designer can size the supply and circuits once the sample and actual light count are agreed.

Keep the decoration comfortable for guests

For an outdoor design, choose operating hours and a brightness limit along with the colour scene. Check views from neighbouring windows and beyond the site. DarkSky and IES guidance favours a clear purpose, controlled output and timing, and warmer light where possible. It does not certify this RGB product. [S3]

If the brief calls for accurate everyday white light, do not approve an RGB decoration from a colourful demo. Request the actual white scene or choose a suitable white-light product. If illuminating a tree is the priority, do not add bottle lights merely to fill a purchasing list.

FAQ

Will these bottle lights illuminate an entire tree?

The public product data does not establish that result. Treat them as visible decorative lights and assess tree illumination separately using appropriate optics and a site sample.

Do the colour effects run without a controller?

Do not assume that. Ask LIKELIGHT to demonstrate the exact light, controller and programme proposed for the order, including how staff operate it.

Can they be left outside all year?

That has not been established for the proposed version. Resolve the conflicting protection ratings and confirm the body, connectors, power equipment and installation exposure before an outdoor order.

Can I order a large quantity after seeing one light on a desk?

A desk sample helps assess the body and colour, but not the installed appearance or maintenance access. Approve a representative area at the intended viewing distance first.

Should the quote include a spare for every light?

There is no universal spare ratio. Discuss replacement access, acceptable downtime, order size and future availability, then agree a practical spare quantity and matching version.

A short enquiry is enough to start

Copy and adapt: “We are planning lighting for [hotel/courtyard/atrium]. Guests should see [glowing decorations / the illuminated tree / both]. Attached are a photo with approximate dimensions and our main viewing position. We have [number of areas or trees], with [covered/exposed] installation in [destination country]. Please suggest a suitable light and a representative sample proposal, with controls, fixing details and the complete supply scope.”

Start with that photo and intended effect; a detailed engineering form is not needed for the first conversation. Review the bottle-light candidate, then ask for the actual version and sample plan rather than ordering from the image alone.

Ready to compare a sample proposal?

Ask for the light, controls, installation details and costs as one proposal.
