WS2811 vs WS2815: Individual Pixels or LED Groups?

Two RGB strips can both advertise 60 LEDs per metre while producing very different animations. The missing detail is the number of independently controlled pixels. LED quantity describes physical light sources; pixel quantity describes the smallest separately commanded group.

Choose the required control resolution first, then confirm the exact strip. Do not order from the IC name or supply voltage alone. This guide compares a common grouped WS2811 arrangement with an individually controlled WS2815 arrangement, not every product carrying those names.

What changes between the two arrangements?

WS2811 is used in external-driver RGB designs, including strips in which several LEDs share one pixel. Other WS2811 products have different arrangements. WS2815 integrates RGB control in the LED package and is available in individually addressable strips. Its redundant data route is a separate feature, not the definition of pixel resolution.

Question Grouped strip Individual-pixel strip
Smallest commanded unit One LED group One LED package
Moving dot appearance Moves in blocks Moves LED by LED
Required controller count Number of groups Number of pixels
Purchase description LEDs/m and pixels/m LEDs/m and pixels/m

A group cannot be divided into independent pixels by increasing the controller setting. That setting changes the transmitted data length, not the wiring inside the strip. Conversely, software grouping can make individual pixels behave together when the controller supports it.

A 5-metre calculation before ordering

Assume two hypothetical RGB strips both have 60 LEDs/m over 5m. Strip A has three LEDs per pixel; strip B has one. These are teaching assumptions, not confirmed specifications for all WS2811 and WS2815 products.

Calculation Strip A Strip B
Physical LEDs: 5 × 60 300 300
LEDs per pixel 3 1
Pixels: LEDs / group size 100 300
RGB color values: pixels × 3 300 900

The threefold pixel difference changes animation mapping and controller planning, not necessarily brightness or electrical power by the same ratio. The color-value totals are not a claim about a particular controller's DMX universe allocation. Check its mapping rules and output limits separately.

Match resolution to the visual task

For a broad color wash viewed from a distance, grouped pixels may provide sufficient detail. For a nearby moving marker, narrow chase or fine graphic, individual pixels offer smaller control steps. Neither arrangement guarantees a smooth light line through a diffuser.

Build a short mock-up with the intended profile, cover and viewing distance. Compare a single moving pixel, a slow gradient and alternating colors. Record the smallest effect that must remain distinguishable, rather than accepting a generic rainbow demonstration as proof.

Check the whole replacement, not only the data

Before substituting a strip, confirm voltage, polarity, IC profile, RGB order, pixel count, connector pinout and cutting interval. Matching voltage does not prove matching control behavior. Matching connector shells do not prove matching pin assignments.

WS2815's backup route does not repair lost power, a short circuit or every adjacent-pixel fault. Follow the exact first-pixel and backup-input diagram. Keep mains work with a qualified professional; isolate power before changing connections and use appropriately protected supply branches.

Questions to include in a quotation

Ask for LEDs/m, pixels/m, LEDs per pixel, watts/m, PCB width, voltage and the actual cut-mark spacing. Request a sample video showing one commanded pixel and a clear photograph of the copper pads. A product photo illustrates construction; it is not an approved wiring diagram.

Compare strip, controller capacity, power supplies, cable feeds and maintenance access together. Lower pixel count may reduce control-data demand but does not establish lower energy use. Require the final production specification and sample approval before a volume order.

Frequently asked questions

Does every WS2811 strip use three LEDs per pixel?

No. This is one common arrangement, not a universal rule. Confirm the finished product.

Does 12V always mean grouped pixels?

No. Supply voltage does not determine pixel grouping; individual-pixel 12V products also exist.

Can a setting split a wired group?

No. Separate control requires separate hardware pixel channels, not a larger software count.

Does 300 LEDs mean I should enter 300 pixels?

Only if each LED package is independently addressable. In the three-LED example, enter 100 pixels.

Which one is brighter?

The IC name cannot establish that. Compare measured output at the required settings and temperature.

Can I cut anywhere between LEDs?

No. Cut only at the approved marks with power disconnected, then restore polarity, data direction and sealing.
