Why IP67/IP68 LED Neon Flex Can Still Fail Outdoors: Water-Ingress Paths and Installation Controls
An IP code describes tested enclosure protection; it does not automatically certify every cut end, field joint, cable gland, mounting channel, drainage path and power box in the completed installation.
Answer in 30 seconds
- Freeze the exact approved waterproof version; do not treat IP65/IP67/IP68 options as interchangeable.
- Map every boundary: factory end, field cut, connector, cable exit, junction box and power cabinet.
- Respect bending direction and minimum radius; local compression or stretching can damage the sealing system.
- Provide drainage so water does not remain around joints or enter along a cable.
- Accept the completed assembly with inspection and exposure tests, not from a catalogue rating alone.
1. What an IP rating proves—and what it does not
IEC 60529 defines degrees of protection provided by enclosures [S1]. A valid claim should identify the tested product configuration, applicable standard edition, laboratory/report and conditions. It does not automatically extend to a section cut on site, a third-party connector, a cable gland installed in the wrong orientation or a junction box with a different rating.
LIKELIGHT's L-NH-1616 page lists IP67 and also IP65/IP67/IP68 options [S2]. The engineering consequence is not “all versions are IP68”; it is “the waterproof construction must be frozen before ordering and matched to the exposure.”
2. The installed system has multiple waterproof boundaries
| Boundary | Typical failure path | Required evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Factory end cap | Incomplete bond, contamination, movement before cure | Approved process and inspection record |
| Cable exit | Capillary path, missing strain relief, cable pulling on seal | Exit drawing, gland/overmold and pull control |
| Field joint | Incompatible sealant, wrong preparation or cure | Released field-joint kit and work instruction |
| Flexible body | Over-bending, twisting, fastener compression or abrasion | Bend direction/radius and channel detail |
| Junction/power box | Pressure cycling, condensation, poor gland orientation or standing water | Enclosure report, gland schedule, drainage/vent design |
3. Water does not need a visible hole
Ingress may follow an interface between cable and seal, migrate along conductor strands, pass through a poorly bonded end or collect as condensation inside a cabinet. Gore documents how temperature cycling produces positive pressure and vacuum that repeatedly stress seals [S4]. This mechanism is directly relevant to enclosures and junction boxes. Whether a vent is appropriate depends on the enclosure design; it is not permission to perforate a neon-flex body.
4. Why bending and mounting matter
A flexible product is flexible only in its approved direction and radius. Bending the wrong plane, twisting during installation, forcing the line around a sharp corner or overtightening clips can create local tension, compression and surface damage. The exact minimum radius and clip spacing for the selected L-NH-1616 version are 待确认 until the approved drawing is issued.
Do not release an installation that:
- Uses one radius copied from a different profile or light-emitting direction.
- Places a field joint at the tightest bend or lowest drainage point.
- Lets the cable weight hang from the end seal.
- Traps the silicone line in a channel without thermal movement allowance.
- Uses metal screws or clips that visibly indent the luminous body.
5. Exposure matrix before selecting IP67 or IP68
| Exposure | Question | Decision evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Rain/splash | Can water drain away from every joint? | Elevation, slope and drip-loop detail |
| Temporary immersion | What depth, duration and water condition? | Approved IP test report and project exposure |
| Continuous immersion | Are conditions defined by manufacturer and project? | Exact IP68 conditions and complete assembly approval |
| Cleaning jet/chemicals | Does the selected claim cover pressure and chemistry? | Separate test/compatibility evidence |
| Coastal/UV | Will seals, cable and metalwork withstand aging? | Material and corrosion specification |
Do not infer that a higher second digit covers every exposure. Pressure washing, chemicals, UV aging and salt corrosion can require separate evidence.
6. Worked failure investigation: 120m facade outline
Illustrative project scenario: 24 factory-finished 5m sections form a 120m outline. After rain, three sections show discoloration. Do not replace all three and close the case. Tag each failed section and inspect the nearest end cap, cable exit, connector, low point and upstream junction box.
- Photograph moisture location before opening anything.
- Separate external surface water from moisture inside the silicone or box.
- Compare failure position with slope and water-flow direction.
- Inspect for a common installer, batch, joint kit, cable exit or bend.
- Electrical-isolate and follow the supplier's safe test procedure; do not energize wet unknown assemblies.
- Retain samples for seal-section inspection and report traceability.
If all failures occur next to field joints, the corrective action differs from condensation found in power boxes. Location data converts “IP product failed” into a testable root-cause hypothesis.
7. Factory and site acceptance
| Factory release | Site release |
|---|---|
| Model/version, IP report reference, length, ends, lead exit, connector, visual seal, electrical function. | Orientation, radius, clips, joints, strain relief, drip loops, drainage, boxes, exposure test and traceable photos. |
LIKELIGHT's IP67 silicone wall-washer review explicitly states that the fixture rating does not automatically validate the installed assembly [S3].
8. When not to choose field-cut neon flex
- The site cannot control surface preparation, sealant ratio/cure or cleanliness.
- Joints will be inaccessible after facade closure.
- The route places joints in standing water or immersion.
- Installers cannot maintain bend radius and strain relief.
- No acceptance test or failed-section replacement plan exists.
In these conditions, factory-finished custom lengths may reduce field sealing variability, subject to transport, tolerance and replacement planning.

10. FAQ
Does IP68 mean permanently waterproof?
No universal condition should be assumed. Obtain the manufacturer's defined IP68 test conditions and confirm the complete installed assembly.
Can an IP67 strip be cut on site?
Only if the approved product and field-joint procedure permit it; the new end must be treated as a new waterproof boundary.
Why is there water inside without an obvious leak?
Possible paths include capillary migration, seal interfaces and condensation from temperature/pressure cycling [S4–S5].
Can silicone sealant repair any leak?
No. Compatibility, preparation, geometry, cure and the original failure path must be confirmed.
Should a vent be added?
Only to a designed enclosure when specified. Do not add a vent or hole to neon flex itself.
