RGB Pixel Modules or Addressable Strips? Buy a Serviceable Colour-Changing Lightbox

LikeLight Tom · Operations · Technical reviewer: pending confirmation

Choose discrete RGB modules for adjustable zones or strips for repeatable straight rows. Approve the real face, service unit and full BOM before repeating lightboxes.

Decide in 30 seconds

For irregular sign shapes or separately serviced zones, begin with a sample of L-M-DC12V-SM16703P RGB modules. Separate positions let the fabricator plan the layout around corners and access points.

For repeated rectangular cabinets with straight mounting rows, begin with L-S-UCS1903-10060 in an approved 12 V UCS1903 revision. Choose the revision and cut plan, not simply “60 LEDs/m”.

For replacement across a chain, start with the existing face sample, controller and service unit. Hold the firm quote without cabinet depth, face material, the approved interface or a realistic replacement route.

Send cabinet dimensions, depth, quantity and destination for two sample BOMs. Ask for one representative real-face sample before multiplying the order.

Three buying tasks—not claimed customer cases

A. A sign fabricator needs an irregular illuminated shape

A narrow return, logo corner or removable access zone may favour discrete modules. Ask for numbered positions and cable routing using the actual outline; do not turn this article's grid into a spacing rule.

Put the final printed face on the sample. Approve corner appearance and the replacement operation together; accessibility without a visible patch is part of the purchase.

B. A lightbox OEM repeats rectangular cabinets

Straight strip rows are a candidate where cut lengths and mounting supports can repeat. Ask for a released row drawing, support/thermal arrangement and power-feed layout for the selected revision.

Judge with the real diffuser, print and depth. More LEDs and higher watts do not establish better face uniformity. Freeze the accepted row map before ordering multiple cabinets.

C. A retail chain wants fewer replacement surprises

The buyer needs the same effect and a practical repair unit across locations. Supply controller settings, connector photos, graphic samples and the accessible opening.

Specify a labelled module section or strip row with connectors as the service unit. Quote matching spares and a change procedure; a loose LED component is not automatically a field-replaceable spare.

Why the final face—not LED count—decides

The face receives light from several sources. Cabinet depth, source positions, diffuser/print transmission and reflections change the overlap and visible colour. No measured uniformity ranking is available for these two candidates.

The public module listing gives 70×12 mm and 0.96 W/module [S1]. The strip listing gives a 10 mm PCB and 14.4 W/m [S2]. Neither width is the complete installation envelope: allow links, supports, bends and tool access.

Public options DC12V; SM16703P;20/string 12 V/24 V; UCS1903/WS2811;5 m roll
Order boundary Approved module revision and branch map Approved 12 V UCS1903 SKU, cuts and enclosure option

The 12 V strip lists 20 grouped pixels/m; its 24 V option lists 10/m [S2]. Pixel grouping is not LED count. Do not combine those resolutions or assume module and strip settings are interchangeable.

After choosing modules, use the module mapping follow-up to prepare the controller discussion.

“Addressable” does not prove native DMX input or a compatible controller.

IP concerns an enclosure classification [S5], not the complete lightbox. UL distinguishes sign and component pathways [S4]. This article claims no LIKELIGHT UL certification; request the destination-specific assembly evidence.

A five-cabinet calculation—and its buying meaning

Teaching assumptions: five identical 1.2×0.6 m faces. Candidate A allocates 8×4=32 module positions per cabinet. Candidate B uses four straight 1.2 m strip rows,4.8 m per cabinet.

This layout is for quantity comparison only. It is not a tested spacing recommendation or proof that the two layouts produce equal brightness or uniformity.

Arithmetic 32-module layout Four-row strip layout
Five cabinets 5×32=160 modules 5×4.8=24 m installed
Public packaging basis 160/20=8 strings One 5 m roll/box:5 rolls=25 m bought
Lamp load per cabinet 32×0.96=30.72 W 4.8×14.4=69.12 W
At proposed 12 V, I=P/V 30.72/12=2.56 A 69.12/12=5.76 A

The strip allocation leaves 0.2 m per cabinet,1 m total. It is not automatically usable spare stock. Both packaging plans need approved cuts, links and section allocation;32 modules do not approve one electrical branch.

Loads use public nominal ratings, not measured consumption. Add control loads and use the actual supply's temperature/protection limits [S3]. Overload protection is not permission for continuous overload.

The module arithmetic is lower for this invented layout, not an energy-saving proof at equal light output. First approve one face sample. Then revise quantities, feeds and service sections before repeating five boxes.

Compare the complete installed scope

System cost = lights + supports + power + control + cables/connectors/protection + fabrication/installation + service spares + freight. List both initial procurement and the cost of one planned replacement.

Request both quotes against the same final-face acceptance and delivery scope. Prices, labour and lead times are not verified here; no cheapest-system claim follows from the watt or unit count.

Selection matrix

Decision Discrete RGB modules RGB strip rows
Visual effect Adjust individual positions; approve final face Repeat straight rows; approve final face
Installation space Housing, links, returns and tool access PCB plus support, termination and bend space
Power/control 12 V revision; approved feeds and module map Freeze voltage/IC, grouped pixels, cuts and feeds
Failure impact Depends on power/data branches and connector faults Depends on row sections and power/data path
Maintenance Agree section removal and matching harness Agree row removal, mounting and end restoration
Complete cost Placement labour, links, feeds and spares Supports, cut allocation, feeds and spare rows

Neither layout has a verified universal signal distance or automatic fault bypass. Ask for the longest planned link and a defined failure demonstration, not a generic “breakpoint” promise.

What LIKELIGHT's quote should return

  • Exact SKU/revision and valid voltage, IC and enclosure options—not a mixed option list.
  • Dimensioned cabinet/position or row drawings; cut and terminal definitions; approved power/data branch map.
  • Numbered BOM including supports, supply, controller, leads, protection and the agreed replacement unit.
  • A representative sample plan and agreed face/control/service acceptance points.
  • Full system price and exclusions, matching spares, packing/freight, MOQ, warranty and confirmed lead time.

Treat this as the requested quotation checklist, not a claim that those drawings, stock or delivery promises already exist.

Accept a sample before scaling up

  1. Build a representative corner and straight region at the actual depth, with final print/diffuser and proposed mounting.
  2. Agree brightness, visible spots, colour consistency and viewing distances; inspect a defined scene, not a bare-LED photo.
  3. A qualified installer checks current and voltage at the farthest loaded point, the longest signal link and the chosen controller.
  4. Isolate a defined faulty section, replace it through the planned opening and recheck appearance/control. Record the accepted BOM and thresholds.

A visually acceptable sample does not replace electrical, enclosure or destination-specific sign evidence.

When not to choose these options

For a static white graphic, do not buy programmable RGB merely because it is available. Ask for a suitable white-backlighting option and compare the actual face and controls.

Do not force strip around an unapproved tight corner, or use discrete modules where cable/tool clearance is insufficient. Do not release either choice on LED count alone or before repair access is defined.

FAQ

Can one controller operate both candidates?

Only after checking the ordered IC/protocol, voltage, pinout, colour order, grouped pixels and firmware on samples. Matching RGB colours or a connector count does not establish compatibility.

When is a signal amplifier needed?

Supply first-point and inter-section lengths and cable details. Test the actual controller interface. A data amplifier does not add power or cure voltage drop; no universal distance is approved here.

Should I raise voltage if a row end looks dim?

Do not exceed the approved input. Check loaded current, loop resistance, connector drop and feeds. Use ΔV=I×R for the relevant segment, then validate the revised circuit under load.

Does breakpoint continuation keep the whole box lit?

No verified bypass guarantee is available for these ordered revisions. Define the fault type and downstream boundary; demonstrate it on the sample and agree a service section.

Does an IP67 component make the sign outdoor-ready?

No. Check the selected revision, cut ends, connectors, enclosure and destination's sign requirements. A component listing is not certification of the final sign [S4][S5].
